South Shields are threatening legal action after their table-topping Betvictor Northern Premier League campaign was voided.

They have invested heavily in a bid to climb out of the seventh tier, into the National League North.

Shields led FC United of Manchester by 12 points and were almost guaranteed promotion.

But the FA have scrapped the season and results will be “expunged”.

That has caused fury at a club who have lured fans away from Sunderland and the Stadium of Light with their success under joint-managers Graham Fenton and Lee Picton.

Chairman Geoff Thompson said the club had been "badly let down".

And he insisted they would be “writing to the FA in the strongest possible terms seeking an appeal… or will take legal action.”

Thompson branded the decision “appalling”, adding: “There is no denying this decision has a huge financial impact.

“We have invested heavily this year in a host of areas and the loss of promotion will also affect some of our revenue assumptions for next season.

“My message to all our fans and sponsors is – sorry a huge disappointment and we've all been badly let down."

Boss Fenton said: “If you go to the other end of the spectrum and look at Liverpool, they are far further ahead than we are. They are in the same situation.

“I saw Neil Lennon’s speak the other day, and he was talking about if it has to cease now, it’s a case that it has to go on points per game because we are so far into the season.

“Obviously we would be down that same line and I am sure that Liverpool would be as well.”
